DOES GOD STILL SPEAK: TRUST & OBEY

Last week, we encouraged you to pray a simple prayer, “Help me listen!”

John 10:27, “My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me.” (NLT)

The Greek word for “follow” is akoloutheō — to go after, to obey, to move in the same direction.

This is the same Greek word that Jesus used every time he asked people to join His mission (Matthew 4:20, 22; 9:9).

This word is used 71 times in the New Testament! And when the word “follow” is used, it always involves movement and action. It’s not something we just intend to do.

So, let’s go back to the question of this series, “Does God still speak?” Yes — but sometimes it feels like He’s not speaking because we haven’t yet acted on what He’s already said.

Often the thing God has already asked seems so small, so ordinary, that we overlook it. But obedience in the small things is often where the voice of God grows louder.

If you don’t make a move and act, God isn’t going to give you further direction. You won’t hear His voice. He’ll just wait. God’s silence isn’t punishment—it’s patience.

Obedience in the small things is often where His voice gets louder.

So, why don’t we do this? Maybe the issue isn’t that God isn’t speaking… maybe it’s that we don’t TRUST what He’s saying.

We need to add a prayer: “Help me trust! Help me obey!”

If I don’t trust Him, I won’t obey Him — no matter how clearly I’ve heard Him.

Genesis 22: Abraham heard God’s voice, but he also obeyed it, even when he didn’t understand. And it was on the other side of obedience that he experienced God’s blessing and provision.

It’s one thing to SAY we trust God while we can still see where we’re going. It’s another thing entirely to trust when we can’t see the next step.

He’s still speaking.

He still knows you by name.

And He still invites you to follow — to trust — to obey.

Help me listen.

Help me trust.

Help me obey.

“God, I want to hear Your voice clearly, trust You completely, and obey You quickly.”
